Welch Allyn provides patient data transfer capability between its medical devices and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems utilizing a software interface and connections between the PC and the medical device. Welch Allyn has a portfolio of diagnostic devices that capture both vital signs and cardio-pulmonary information and transmit it to many leading Electronic Health Record systems (EHR) directly through an SDK or interfaced through the Welch Allyn CardioPerfect Workstation Software.
Device Connectivity Software Developer Kit
The Welch Allyn Device Connectivity SDK is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) software product that is licensed to Electronic Health Records systems (EHR) manufacturers for integration into commercially available software applications. The SDK provides developers the ability to communicate with and collect data from Welch Allyn electronic medical devices. The SDK provides connectivity to the Welch Allyn Spot LXi, Spot Vital Signs, VSM 300 and VSM 5200.

This illustration shows the relationship between the application, SDK (shown in the dotted outline) and devices. The SDK enables third-party applications to interface with Welch Allyn devices and data.
The SDK presents a COM interface to abstract the device communications framework. In addition to abstracting device communications framework, the SDK supports error handling and event notification. Once integrated with a third-party Electronic Health Record, the SDK will provide the EHR the ability to request, receive and parse alphanumeric observational data, and error messages from these medical devices. It will provide the user with the ability to configure to a single device. The SDK also provides sample program software that demonstrates how to display the data in the appropriate form.
The Welch Allyn CardioPerfect Software System
The CardioPerfect workstation is a medical device data management system for diagnostic records, which provides paperless efficiency and connectivity. Combined with multiple Welch Allyn diagnostic modules, the Welch Allyn CardioPerfect Workstation gives complete access to all diagnostic tests for each patient.
CardioPerfect Workstation Interface Options
1. Medical Diagnostic Workstation (MDW) API - Application Programming Interface that uses COM controls which gives 3rd party developers control of the Welch Allyn Cardio Perfect workstation as well as access to the data stored in the workstation database. This kit includes documentation and sample programs demonstrating how to use the API.
2. CardioPerfect File Link - an interface between Welch Allyn Cardio Perfect and other 3rd party systems. The CardioPerfect File Link Interface is based on creation of two types of files that can be associated with a patient and imported into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. The files produced are either:
o Image file (TIF)
o Text File (TFL) that contains test identification number unique to CardioPerfect.
The image file has an extension of .TIF and can be viewed with any image viewer that is compatible with a TIF file. The text file has an extension of .TFL and is associated with the "File Link" program so that if the file is double clicked upon, the MS Windows operating system will launch the CardioPerfect Workstation and select the appropriate test.
3. CCOW - is an HL7 standard that allows multiple desktop applications to share both patient context and user security. The Cardio Perfect Workstation application can be CCOW enabled through a registry entry.

4. HL7 - An HL7 interface consists of an interface that translates data from the CardioPerfect workstation into a standard format (HL7) then sends the data to the EHR system. The EHR then parses the message and maps the data into the appropriate EHR Fields. The interface will also accept a standard ADT (Admit\Transfer\Discharge) message.
